Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to bring with me?

Bring a warm jacket and hat if it’s a cold day, which it can be even in late Spring/early Autumn. In summer bring a sun hat and put on sunscreen as the NZ sun can be quite harsh.

Wear comfortable shoes as you will be getting out amongst the animals on the farm. And of course a camera so you can take plenty of amazing photos of the sheep, cattle, wild horses, eels, views of the South Island and the spectacular wind turbines.

Is the ride in the van very bumpy?

Around 95% of the tour will take place on public roads and a purpose built private road, which are all very smooth. About 5% of the drive will be on a farm track, which may be a little bumpy in places, but definitely nothing extreme.

Are there toilets available to access on the tour?

Yes, there is a toilet that you will be able to use at our Shepherd’s cabin and one again on your return from the farm when we feed the eels.

Can I bring a baby or toddler on the tour?

Yes, we have car seats available on request.

What does Tussock Ridge Farm Tours provide?

An unforgettable tour over our farm with lots of interactions with sheep, horses, cattle and eels, as well as spectacular views.

We also include:

  • A free pick-up and drop-off at Centre Port terminal, Wellington train station or the i-SITE centre located in the city

  • Complimentary afternoon tea, i.e. muffins and cheese & crackers, tea/herbal teas/coffee/milo (a hot malt beverage), and a bottle of NZ mineral water

  • Access to sunscreen and insect repellent

Does the tour still go ahead in bad weather?

Yes, our tours operate comfortably rain or shine.

Our tours involve driving in a comfortable forward facing vehicle with air-conditioning and heating.  Our Shepherd’s cabin has a cosy fire which will be going in the cooler weather.

If the weather is too extreme to get out of the vehicle to view the animals and wind turbines then there will be plenty of opportunities to view them from inside the vehicle.
